IP addresses identify devices on the Internet. IP is a set of rules that govern data format sent across the Internet. IP addresses serve to address locations. An IP (Internet Protocol) address locates devices on internet, and then helps these devices to communicate and transfer data over the Internet.

The IP address is like an Identity card for a computer. The IP address, in essence, is a way for the Internet to differentiate between one computing device and another to facilitate the accurate transmission of data and communication to such computing device.

The IP address is the identifier that links devices with each other and allows information to be sent between them: it contains information about a device's location and makes that device ready to use. A total of four digits can be entered, and each can be between 0 and 255. However, some internet addresses have started using alphabets in recent years. The IP address assigned to a computer or user is unique. The creation of these numbers helps routers identify where they send information over the Internet.

What's the purpose of an IP address?

An IP address is used to establish a link between devices that send and receive data.

An IP address is a digital address assigned to your online accessing devices that assists the Internet in delivering relevant material. It's a unique identifier that helps content to be shared between computers and other devices through the Internet.

An IP address has two functions: identifying the host and its network interface, and locates  where it is on the networks.

Format of an IP Address

It is very much needed to understand the format of an IP address to get clarity of the same. The IP contains four digits ranging from 0 to 255 with a decimal. is an example of what an IP address looks like.

However, it is to be kept in mind that IP addresses are not generated randomly. Every country has its IP address code assigned to all computer devices. These IP addresses are provided to every part of the world by  Regional Internet Registries. The entire pool of IP addresses is generated globally by an organization known as Internet Assigned Numbers Authority, which provides the addresses to the Regional Internet Registries, distributing these addresses to various countries.

How Does an IP Address Function?

As mentioned before, an IP address is an identity for every computer device connected to the internet. It is a path through which computers are connected to the net share data with each other.

The function of an IP address takes place in the background. You cannot connect to the Internet using your device directly, and it has to take place through the Internet. This net is the ISP (Internet Service Provider), which is an agent between your device and the Internet. The ISP will provide you the IP address using which your device will connect to the net.


  • Your Gadget connects with the web by interfacing at first to an adress associated with the net.
  • When you are at home, it is your "ISP- Internet Service Provider." At work, that organization will be your ISP.
  • Your IP address is appointed to your Gadget by your ISP- Internet Service Provider.
  • Using your IP address, your searches go through the Internet Service Provider, and of course it is returned to you. As they allow you on the net, it is their job to appoint an IP address to your Gadget.
  • However, your IP address can change. Turning on your modem, switch on or off.
  • At the point when you are all over town – for example, voyaging – and you take your Gadget with you, your home IP address doesn't go with you. This is because you will use another association to get to the web and use another IP address designated to you by the ISP of the hotel, air terminal, or restaurant.


IP addresses can be divided into different categories, and even more types can be found.

Category I - Consumer IP addresses

Every  business will have two IP addresses: private IP addresses and public IP addresses. The terms public and private reference to the location of net - private IP addresses are for devices inside a net, while public ones are used for the outside purpose.

Private IP addresses

Using a private IP address, one can connect a computer or device to their own home. A router usually assigns this address. The private IP address is from 40.xxx.xxx.xxx or 192.168.xxx.xxx. There are probably a growing number of private IP addresses at home with the Internet of Things growth. Each address must be identified separately by the router, and many of the devices must communicate with each other. As a result, each device has a private IP address corresponding to a unique identifier on the net.

Public IP addresses

Public IP addresses are the preliminary addresses associated with a net. All devices on the Internet  will identify your device by its public IP address, and Internet service providers (ISPs) assign this address.

Public IP addresses have two types - dynamic and static.

Dynamic IP addresses

Most internet users use special addresses, and they automatically change from time to time. It will be easier for ISP to manage customers joining and leaving the service and changing their addresses.

Static IP addresses

Static IP addresses are those that were manually made instead of  those that were assigned automatically. Static addresses do not change. Static IP addresses ensure that websites and email addresses associated with them will always have the same IP address. The IP address of most websites is static. When someone navigates to your website or sends you an email, the DNS uses your website's IP address, i.e., Domain Name System.


There are 2 versions of the IP in use on the Internet. IP version 4 (IPv4) is the original version of the Internet Protocol that was first deployed in 1983 on ARPANET, the Internet's predecessor. The other version is IPv6, a  protocol introduced in 1998. The deployment began in the mid-2000s and continues to this day.

In 1979, Internet Stream Protocol was assigned a version, it was never called IPv5. As a result, IPv4 and IPv6 are not consecutive versions. Other versions ranging from v1 to v9 have been defined, but only v4 and v6 have been widely adopted.


IPv4 addresses are in length, limiting the address space to 232. Some IPv4 addresses are reserved for specific purposes, such as multicast addresses. A dot-decimal IPv4 address consists of four decimal numbers ranging from dots.


Addresses in IPv6 have increased  bits to host up to 2128 hosts. As a result, the updated design provides enough addresses for the foreseeable future. The upgrade eased routing on the Internet by allowing a more efficient aggregation of routing prefixes across different subnetworks.

How to Find Your IP Address?

If you wish to know the private IP Address of your device, be it your computer or phone, follow the steps given below:


i) Click on the start menu

ii) Type the letters' cmd' in the search bar.

iii) Right-click on the 'Command Prompt' application and select 'Run as Administrator.'

iv) In the Command Prompt window, type 'ipconfig' and press Enter.

v) Depending on the device through which is associated with the Internet (Ethernet cable or Wi-Fi), the IP address for the same will be displayed below the respective section.


i) Navigate to 'System Preferences.'

ii) Click on the 'Network' tab, and you will be able to see the details of your IP address.


i) Navigate to 'Settings.'

ii) Tap on the 'more info.' symbol beside your Wi-Fi connection (the small 'i' in a circle)


i) Navigate to 'Settings.'

ii) Tap on 'Wi-Fi.'

iii) Tap on 'Advanced Settings', and you will be able to see your IP address.
